Carlos César Bañuelos
Sociologist and border writer
“¿Cuál es el precio que un hombre de bien debe pagar por habitar una de las fronteras más transitadas del mundo?”
— from Chronicles of an Inexact North: Where We Are More Than a Wall
A sociologist and border writer, Carlos César Bañuelos completed his bachelor's degree in Sociology at Fullerton State University and earned his Master’s from Grand Canyon University. Author of the novel Chronicles of an Inexact North: Where We Are More Than a Wall and collaborator on various opinion pieces in the local San Diego press, his work is rooted in a critical and deeply human look at life on the U.S.-Mexico border.
A portrait of the border
Crónicas de un norte inexacto is a portrait of border life in Tijuana and San Diego drafted with a critical yet profoundly human gaze. Carlos César Bañuelos, sociologist and border writer, invites us to rethink the border wall as an emotional and social metaphor, exploring the tensions of identity, inequality and hope that define a binational existence in the face of a transformation of moral values under the cultural influence of the north.
Through language that oscillates between sociological reflection and a poetic sensibility, he portrays the invisible stories of those who cross the line daily that separates—and simultaneously unites—Tijuana and San Diego.
In his narrative, Bañuelos invites the reader into a vulnerable portrayal of his own coming of age as a binational young adult balancing between two worlds to find love, belonging, safety and stability. These experiences resonate as powerfully personal as he expands the theme to explore the tensions and contradictions that define border life.
His writing offers an intimate and critical reading of the wall as a metaphor, not only geographical but also emotional and social, inviting us to rethink the limits of belonging and hope.
